Bringing up alternative treatments with your doctor can feel intimidating. You might worry about being judged or dismissed. However, as plant-based medicine becomes a regulated part of Australian healthcare, more doctors are open to these discussions.
Preparation is Key
Before your appointment, do a little homework:
- Track your symptoms: Keep a sleep diary for a week.
- List past treatments: Write down every medication or therapy you've tried and why it didn't work.
- Be honest: If you've self-medicated in the past, tell your doctor. They need the full picture to keep you safe.
Starting the Conversation
You don't need to be an expert. Try opening with:
"I've been reading about plant-based therapies for insomnia. Given that my current treatment isn't working, do you think this is something we could explore?"
What if My Doctor Says No?
Not all doctors are trained in or comfortable prescribing these therapies. That is their right. However, it is also your right to seek a second opinion.
If your GP is unable to help, you can consult with an Authorised Prescriber—a doctor with specific approval from the TGA to prescribe these treatments.
At Fade Medical, our entire team consists of Authorised Prescribers dedicated to helping patients who have hit a wall with conventional medicine.
